The Lowdown on Our Down

Found in everything from comforters to coats, down is prized for its wonderful warming powers. But navigating the terminology, not to mention the speculation, surrounding this natural material can be tricky. We know how important it is to understand the story behind the products you choose for your home, so we set out to answer the most frequently asked questions about our down.

What exactly is down?

Down refers to the soft, fluffy clusters that form a layer of insulation just beneath the contour feathers of adult ducks and geese. These clusters are softer and trap air more efficiently than feathers, keeping you snug while you sleep.

What do the terms “fill” or “loft” mean as they relate to down?

Fill, or loft, refers to the measure of the ‘fluffiness’ of the down filling. A high fill power means the down traps more air, and is more insulating as a result.

Fill powers usually start at around 400. We fill at 600 and 700, providing the perfect balance of warmth, loft and quality on the premium end of the scale. Our All-Season Comforter has a fill power of 700, and our cooler Lightweight Comforter is 600. We carefully chose these lofts to give you the highest quality product, while maintaining a great degree of climate versatility. It’s important to note, a high fill power does not necessarily mean a heavier comforter—it will just be fluffier (read: higher quality) than a lower fill power. All the better to snuggle up with!

How do we protect our down?

We use silky-soft, 400-thread count sateen shells to encase these fluffy clusters. (did you know, it was rated the best comforter in 2017 by Wirecutter?).

From where do we source your down?

We use Canadian White Down, sourced responsibly from the eco-friendly Hutterite Farms in Northwest Canada. Under no circumstances do we ever engage in unethical practices, like live plucking. Our down goes through a rigorous five-stage cleaning process before being sorted into small batches, ensuring we only use the fluffiest and highest quality clusters.

Anything else I should know?

Our comforters are so beloved, one of them, the All-Season, was named The Sweethome's "Best All-Around Pick," beating out 86 other competitors. We were so proud, we gave it a lifetime warranty :).

On all of our comforters, we use what’s known as a ‘baffle box’ construction. This is a grid of fabric ‘walls’ that runs throughout the inside of the comforter to attach the top and bottom. We use this technique because it allows your comforter to maintain its fluff factor, while keeping the down equally distributed. that you know all there is to know about our down, what are you waiting for? Time to get cozy!
