Ways to Modernize Your Holiday Decor Scheme

‘Tis the season for decking your halls out in holiday decorations. But what to do when you’re in the mood for a look that’s a bit more modern than the traditional red-and-green décor scheme?

Fret not friends, we’re here to help. We put together a list of surprisingly chic contemporary holiday décor ideas to elevate your holiday setups at home. From modern wreaths to minimalist mantel displays, here are six ways to freshen up your holiday décor this season.

1. Moder Wreaths

Forget your grandma’s pinecone-clad garland, modern wreaths are a design-savvy way to make a holiday statement that doesn’t appear too old-fashioned. Hang a slim metal infinity wreath on your front door to welcome guests in true contemporary style, or fashion your own model with faux flowers and colorful ornaments for a customized look.

2. Houseplant Trees

Why waste space on a big, bulky tree when you can employ a festive holiday houseplant or two instead? Dress up a leafy philodendron plant with miniature ornaments or simply strew some string lights around your beloved snake plant to create a modern holiday scene without having to buy a huge tree.

3. Contemporary Stocking Holders and Hooks

While many of us have years-old holiday stockings that hold special places in our hearts, that doesn’t mean we can’t update our mantels with contemporary holders and hooks for them. Pick up a set of marble or acrylic stocking holders for a modern mantel display or opt for some pared down gold-or-brass finished hooks to show off your treasured stockings in style.

4. Unexpected Garlands

If you thought garlands were only composed of faux pine leaves, then it’s time to think again. The web is brimming with cool and contemporary garlands made of interesting materials—think tassels, pom-poms, metallic fringe, and more—that will update your holiday stairwell and mantel scenes without sacrificing an inch of style.

5. Contemporary Ornaments

Nothing modernizes a holiday setup faster than a few fashionable ornaments. Whether you opt for sculptural wire metal ornaments, leopard-print ones, or matte finished styles in gradient colors, adorning your holiday tree, mantel, or any random area of your home with a handful of sleek and contemporary ornaments is a goofproof way to revamp your holiday décor scheme.

6. Minimalist Mantels

You can always count on a minimalist style holiday mantel scene to elevate your holiday décor scheme this season. Instead of decking your mantels out in thick garland and nutcrackers this year, forge a pared down mantel display, with small ornaments, fragrant candles, and sophisticated stocking holders in the same neutral color palette, to keep things clean and contemporary.

Not really interested in a traditional red-and-green holiday décor scheme for your home this season? Consider upgrading your holiday setup with one of these contemporary holiday décor ideas.
