5 Things Every Living Room Should Have

5 Things Every Living Room Should Have

In so many homes, a living room is a place where guests are hosted, movie nights are had, holidays are spent, and memories are made. We think the perfect living room is equal parts relaxing and entertaining. Whether you’re moving into your first place or redecorating the space you’ve loved for years, there are some things every living room should have–besides a comfy couch–and we’ve jotted them down right here for you.

A few lighting options

Your best bet is to design a versatile space equipped for its practical function as a room for hanging out but also one for satisfying any mood, gathering, and time of year. The best way to get any vibe you need out of a room is to have the right lighting.

This means options!  Don’t just settle for overhead lights. Maybe you want to add some industrial sconces by your sofa’s end tables, a mid-century corner lamp, some candles on the mantle, or retro string lights. Adding 2 or 3 sources of light to your living room gives you more control over the mood of the room–from productive work space to house party.

Something to keep you warm

For crisp winter mornings or cozy movie nights, every living room needs an option for staying warm. We recommend adding a throw blanket to your sofa and keeping an extra nearby for your partner or your guests. Go bold with a colorful statement blanket or keep it earthy and neutral. Adding a throw is the perfect opportunity to show off a bit of your taste in decor.

A table

Every living room needs a table. No matter the size of your space, a surface to put your drink down, play a game, or place a candle is totally necessary. So, don’t skip this one! Space-saving end tables can do the trick in a smaller area while a coffee table can really center a large room. Don’t forget your coasters!

Entertainment

What sets a traditional sitting room, or tea room, apart from a living room is the entertainment. When designing your perfect living room, take this into consideration. You may want a television, some shelving for books, storage space for board games and cards, an area for your ever-growing record collection or photo albums. You know best what keeps you entertained. Don’t shy away from putting it on display!

A conversation piece

Make your space uniquely yours by adding a piece that sparks a story or a question. Maybe it’s a gorgeous plant you’re proud to have kept alive, artwork that inspires you, photos of your family and friends, or an area rug that commands attention. There’s nothing like having a space that you’re truly proud of, feels most like you, and gives you all that you need.
